Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Lorna and Charlie Sr., opened Caymus Vineyards in 1972, starting off with 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Caymus remains 100% family-owned and run, as the next generation takes on the responsibility of this farming and winemaking operation.

Charlie was a farmer through-and-through. Before co-founding Caymus, he grew captivated by wine and winemaking, becoming a serious home winemaker. For Charlie, working hard was never something to avoid. He showed us what it means to endure and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

While the wine has sufficient tannins and structure for long-term bottle aging, Caymus Cabernet is dark and concentrated, with ripe, luxurious, fruit-driven softness that shows from the day of release.

As far as this wine is concerned, it is not simply a Rutherford wine, although I should imagine that Rutherford fruit lies at the heart of it. They do say that this particular wine is a combination of eight of the 16 sub-regions from within the Napa. And they say that those sub-regions range from Coombsville in the south, where it's cooler, up to Calistoga in the north, where it's warmer. The other remark they make is that it's a combination of the opulent, rich valley-floor fruit and some of the mountain vineyards - places like Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, presumably - which provide more freshness and backbone in terms of tannic structure to the wine. So, this is a Napa wine rather than a Rutherford wine, particularly.

Caymus Vineyards is a well-regared and relatively historic wine producer based in Rutherford, in California's Napa Valley. Like most of the valley's famous producers, it specializes in top-end wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon...

Caymus is still very much a family affair with Charles J and his 3 children still running the vineyard. There is with Caymus, as with all the Wagner wineries, a focus on creating the very best wines but in a sustainable way. With a wide range of sustainable practices such as integrated pest management, soil and vine sensors to minimise water usage and wastage, they use cutting edge technology while retaining a minimal intervention policy. The resulting fruit makes some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon available.

Situated in the Napa Valley, renown for its world class Cabernet Sauvignon, Caymus has evolved over the years both physically and in its approach to winemaking. It has evolved from a father and son trying to make wine that they can sell into a winemaking philosophy that wants to create the very best wines that Napa can offer - and it is doing just that.

Caymus Winery (and other subsequent wineries and brands) almost never happened. When it was established in 1971, had Charles and Lorna's son not agreed to run the winery with them, they were going to sell up and move to Australia. Fortunately, Charles J agreed to help and the rest is wine history.

Napa Valley and cabernet sauvignon are synonymous. Hundreds of thousands of thirsty visitors flock to the region every year to sip some of the world's finest wines. When the Wagner family began Caymus in the 1970s, there were just over a dozen wineries in Napa. Today, there are over 500 established wineries and over 1000 producers, per the Napa Valley Vintners. Still, each year, Caymus is a consumer favorite. 041b061a72
